Sojourner Truth State Park is New York State’s newest park. Only a portion of the park is currently open and available to the public as it undergoes major developments, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul on July 18, 2025.
Lake Sophia, named in honor of Sojourner Truth’s daughter, is located on the western side of the park. Lake Sophia is a spring-fed quarry lake that is currently being transformed into a public swimming facility. It will be the first new swimming facility in the New York State Parks system in 20 years, and is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026. The facility will include a 12,000-square foot floating swim crib which will provide accessibility accommodations to provide smooth entry into the water, and safety to those learning to swim. The facility will include a pavilion area with public restrooms, showers, a first aid station, and lifeguard facilities. A new park entrance off of Route 32 and restoration of existing historic structures are also scheduled to be completed by Summer 2026.
Further developments for 2027 include a scenic overlook, a outdoor community event space with public restrooms, and installations to interpret the area’s Indigenous Lenape heritage, industrial history, geology and natural environment.
